Orange Blossom Award: The Good Peaches
by Avery Anderson
For proving collaboration can still be brave
In a year when arts organizations were told — implicitly and explicitly — to stay in their lanes, The Good Peaches did the opposite.
The production brought together American Stage, The Florida Orchestra, and projectALCHEMY for a genuinely shared act of creation: theater, music, and dance woven together on the same stage, at the same scale, with equal artistic stakes.
This wasn’t a guest appearance.
It wasn’t a logo swap.
It wasn’t “collaboration” as a grant-friendly buzzword.
It was institutions trusting each other enough to build something none of them could have made alone.
At the Mahaffey Theater, The Good Peaches unfolded as a living argument for what’s possible when disciplines stop competing for oxygen. Orchestral sound didn’t sit behind the story — it shaped it. Movement didn’t decorate the music — it carried it. The theatrical spine held everything together, not as a hierarchy, but as a shared language.
That kind of risk matters in 2025.
As budgets tighten and audiences fragment, the easiest move is retreat: smaller casts, safer choices, siloed seasons. The Good Peaches chose expansion instead — not in scale for scale’s sake, but in imagination.
The Orange Blossom this year honors the collective courage behind the work:
the administrators who said yes, the artists who listened as much as they led,
and the belief that collaboration isn’t a compromise — it’s a multiplier.
In a moment defined by scarcity, The Good Peaches reminded Tampa Bay that abundance can still be built — together.
What Are the Orange Blossom Awards?
