From "Raisin" to "Hot Wing"
Why Elijah Jordan is Proof That Theatre Belongs to Everyone
by Avery Anderson
There is a persistent, mildly exhausting myth that theater is an elite club. We’ve been told that to truly appreciate the stage, you need a monocle, a perfectly tailored suit, a glass of champagne you can’t pronounce, and an inherent understanding of 17th-century French existentialism.
It’s total nonsense. Art isn't meant to be locked away in a gilded vault for the wealthy; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem meant for everyone. And if you need absolute, undeniable proof of that, look no further than Elijah Jordan, who is currently making his professional mainstage debut in American Stage’s production of The Hot Wing King.
Elijah didn’t drop out of a European conservatory fully formed. He is a product of our community, a homegrown powerhouse who has spent years proving that the stage belongs to anyone with the grit, heart, and passion to claim it.
The Full-Circle Journey: From Travis to the Mainstage
To understand why Elijah’s debut in The Hot Wing King matters so much, you have to rewind the tape to 2018.
Long before he was tackling professional mainstage scripts, Elijah was a kid in American Stage’s summer camps and classes. In 2018, he stepped onto the American Stage boards as a child actor, playing Travis in A Raisin in the Sun. (And yes, the archival photos are exactly as heartwarming as you’re imagining).

He wasn't just passing through; he was planting roots.
Elijah spent his high school years training rigorously at Jonathan C. Gibbs High School as a member of the prestigious PCCA Program. He put in the hours, participating in various school productions—most recently tackling the intense narrative of The Laramie Project. Having just graduated high school this past May, he is already preparing for his next massive leap: moving to the Windy City to attend Columbia College Chicago, where he’ll continue to hone his craft.
But before he packs his bags for Chicago, he’s treating local audiences to a masterclass in growth.

"Young, Gifted, and Full of Potential"
Elijah’s rise isn't a stroke of overnight luck. It’s the result of relentless dedication, a fact fiercely backed up by the mentors and creatives who have watched him evolve from a wide-eyed kid into a professional peer.
Patrick Arthur Jackson, who shared the stage with a young Elijah in A Raisin in the Sun and has mentored him since, has watched that raw curiosity sharpen into a true artistic weapon:
"Elijah’s curiosity about his characters and his commitment to refining his work have only deepened over the years that I have worked with him as a teacher/mentor and fellow creative. Now, as an actor heading off to a collegiate program, I am excited to see his artistry continue to flourish." — Patrick Arthur Jackson

That sentiment is echoed by those who pushed him through the grueling audition processes that separate the amateurs from the professionals. Andresia Moseley, one of his theater teachers and acting coaches, didn't hold back her emotion when discussing his breakthrough:
"I am incredibly proud of EJ and the dedication he has shown to his craft. As one of his acting coaches with decades in this work. I recognized from day one that he possessed a unique discipline and natural passion for acting at such a young age that set him apart. It was a privilege to coach him through the audition process for Hot Wing King and witness him earn his first professional role. Seeing his first professional performance was a joyful moment, I even shed a few tears and I believe he has the ability to grow into a true powerhouse actor. He is young, gifted, and full of potential, and I look forward to seeing what time, experience, and continued seasoning bring to his already bright future. I am so very proud." — Andresia Moseley
Why This Story Matters
This is exactly why we do what we do at the Arts Passport.
When we talk about connecting people to art, we aren't just talking about buying a ticket to sit in the dark for two hours. We are talking about the ecosystem that creates humans like Elijah Jordan.
- Art is an incubator: A kid attending a summer camp in St. Petersburg can end up leading a professional mainstage regional production before they even pack their bags for college.
- Art is a mirror: Stories like The Hot Wing King don’t require a secret handshake to understand—they require a heartbeat. They are about family, love, culture, and the beautiful, messy reality of being human.
- Art is for everyone: Seeing a local student rise through the ranks proves that the stage isn’t an untouchable fortress. It’s a neighborhood porch, and the door is wide open.
Elijah Jordan is heading to Chicago next, and there is zero doubt he’s going to set that city on fire. But right now, he is on the American Stage mainstage, bringing his journey full circle. Go see him. Not because it’s the "sophisticated" thing to do—but because it’s spectacular storytelling, powered by one of our own.
