Throw Away Your High School English Class: Shakespeare as an Action Movie

Throw Away Your High School English Class: Shakespeare as an Action Movie

Dramaturg and actor Roxanne Fay on adapting Julius Caesar for an all-female cast and finding humanity in the crosshairs of history.

Host: Avery Anderson Guest: Roxanne Fay

In this episode of the Tampa Bay Arts Passport Podcast, we sit down with one of the region’s most versatile theatrical chameleons: Roxanne Fay. Whether she’s performing at Jobsite Theater or workshopping new plays in New York, Fay has spent her career "embodying the alchemy of gender" on stage.

This March, Fay brings a reimagined, action-packed adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar to The Studio@620 in St. Petersburg. But before you let your high school Shakespeare trauma kick in, listen to Fay’s pitch: this is a "compact" Roman epic that clips along like a contemporary thriller.

"Throw the idea that, oh my God, I’m going to a Shakespeare play out the window. Think about, did you see Gladiator? Did you see Spartacus? ... It’s more of a thoughtful entertainment than it is a lesson."
